How is downstream evolving in an Alberta and Global context?
Opportunities for extending the value chain in Alberta are becoming more diverse. The old model of either selling oil and gas directly to export markets or at best refine gasoline has evolved. There is enormous opportunity in processing NGLs like ethane, propane and butane too add value and create new, accessible, sustainable markets for Canada, as evidenced by our Heartland Petrochemical Complex.
With the evolution of technology, downstream provides more diverse product opportunities than ever from airplane de-icer to active outerwear, from dollar bills to reusable coffee cups. For many energy companies, crude oil is still a core business, but with the development and innovation of petrochemicals, downstream opportunities provide the road map for diversifying Alberta’s economy and making more out of the abundance of natural resources in the ground. The answer for Alberta is to get more value out of the province’s resources.
